Dear Twitter,
I realize that you and I don’t know each other, but I have some unsolicited advice for you.
I have been working in web development for many years now, and I totally respect how your platform has captured the attention of people around the world. In fact, I have to admit that I’m more than a bit jealous of your popularity and your success.
That being said, you have really become annoying.
Maybe your friends haven’t told you because they don’t want to hurt your feelings, or maybe they’re simply trying to cash-in on your success. The bottom line is that they don’t have your best interest at heart. They’re using you to promote themselves in a shameful way, and I believe it’s sullying your reputation.
What am I doing right now (in 140 characters or less)? I’m wondering why anyone cares! If anyone really wants to know what I’m doing, they should call me. If they don’t have my phone number, then I’m worried they might be stalking me.
Seriously, if anyone has time to wonder what Shaq is doing right this minute then they really need to get a life. If he’s doing something worthwhile, it will make the news.
Twitter – you need to stop this madness. Your friends are encouraging people to share intimate personal information about themselves with the entire world. . . and I’m really getting sick of companies and newcasters saying “Check us out on Twitter”.
Should I even mention the Miss USA Pageant? Let’s just forget that even happened.
I really think that you’re a cool website, but I’m simply sick of hearing about you 24 hours a day. Consider taking a vacation to relax and enjoy the fruits of your success.
Best Wishes,
Art
I get the hyperbole thing that surrounds Twitter is annoying. However, there are many legitimate uses for twitter. It is micro-blogging. It is not what you’re doing, but what are you thinking. That’s the more important question.
The web is all about information exchanges. If there’s someone that shares similar passions with me, that has relevant thought processes, I’d like to follow them, and stay on top of any new trends/info they’ve run across.
I use it as a medium to communicate, and learn from others. I think over the last few months, Twitter has earned it’s place as the premier micro-blogging api. I think that there are limits to what I’m interested in, or what twitter should be used for. I do not want to keep up with NBC news on twitter, I’d rather watch the news or read the articles as they appear through RSS.
